LEADING physical bunker and lubricant supplier Peninsula Petroleum donated £7,000 to international maritime charity The Mission to Seafarers at a presentation ceremony in St James’s, London.

Speaking from Peninsula Petroleum’s head office, Managing Director John Bassadone said: “Peninsula Petroleum is a leading player in the marine fuels market, dealing with shipowners and operators worldwide on a daily basis. We recognise the need to support the crews that man these ships and value the excellent work that The Mission to Seafarers carries out on their behalf.”

Receiving the donation, the Secretary General of The Mission to Seafarers, the Revd Canon Bill Christianson, spoke of the growing needs of seafarers visiting the charity’s centres. “The shipping industry, like many areas of business, has a tough year ahead of it and we believe that seafarers will need our services more in 2009 than in previous years,” he said. “That is why it is even more wonderful that Peninsula Petroleum is supporting our work by making this generous gift.”

The Mission to Seafarers is an international charity working with seafarers in over 230 ports around the world. In over 100 ports, the maritime welfare agency provides seafarers’ centres for visiting crews to access essential services such as communication facilities, hospitality and pastoral assistance. All port chaplains engage in ship visiting – meeting crews at their place of work and offering a welcome, help and advice.

This is the first donation The Mission to Seafarers has received from Peninsula’s charitable fund and the money donated will be used to support and expand its work.
