AS the nights draw in and the temperature drops, all over the country the steady rhythm of runners pounding the footpaths of local highways and byways can be heard as men and women prepare for the London Marathon 2010.

Among those gearing up for the run in April this year are the Revd Chris Burke and his GP wife Helen who will be completing the 26.2-mile course in aid of The Mission to Seafarers.

The couple are great supporters of the Mission with Chris’s East London church hosting the society’s carol concert back in 2007. Until recently he served on the Mission’s publicity and appeals committee which looked at ways of raising the society’s profile through PR and fundraising.

“It’s a pleasure to be running with my wife for the Mission,” said Chris as FAN caught up with him. “Both of us enjoy sport and when we lived in Yorkshire we used to regularly take part in fell running across the moors. Our training this year will be different as we now live in East London, but we hope the River Thames will give us the inspiration to train hard as well as reminding us of the importance of sea-borne trade.”

Chris is currently rector of St Dunstan and All Saints, Stepney, a church that is affectionately known as the Merchant Navy Church, whilst Helen is an inner-city GP serving the many nationalities and cultures that live in the East End. Both of them are committed to raising as much money as possible to help The Mission to Seafarers.

“The work the Mission does is invaluable to the men and women on whom we all depend,” says Chris. “Helen and I are really looking forward to taking part in the Marathon next year and I hope that FAN readers across the country will feel able to support us as we raise money for this most worthy cause.”

If you would like to support Chris and Helen’s run you can make an online donation. Alternatively, cheques, made payable to The Mission to Seafarers, may be sent to Stuart Bell, events organiser of The Mission to Seafarers at: The Mission to Seafarers, St Michael Paternoster Royal, London, EC4R 2RL
